Air Source Heating System
from "UK Landlord" magazine, January 2007
Landlords looking to reduce the heating costs in their properties, and to earn environmental green points, may be interested in the BWarm range of heating products offered by HeatKing.
Based around the use of heat pumps, the products are electrically powered appliances designed to provide heating through water systems, either radiators or underfloor. They do this by extracting heat from a free, renewable energy source such as the earth, water or air.
The earth, water or air absorbs and stores heat from the sun and from the earth's core. In the UK, the average constant temperature of the earth at about 1.5m deep, is 11 ° to 12° celsius. A similar situation exists with underground water sources or large surface water sources.
It is also possible to extract considerable heat from the ambient air at temperatures as low as minus 15 °C.
The cost savings come about because of the high efficiency of the units. According to HeatKing, the "output heat energy can be up to 4 times the electrical input power - something not possible with other methods of heating." There are also environmental benefits from using the air source heat pump. The HeatKing BWarm units use the latest technological advances in both compressor design and system control. This allows the units to provide heating more efficiently than traditional forms of heating. The BWarm air source heat pump will, according to HeatKing, save in excess of 2 tonnes of carbon per year compared to other forms of heating - producing 50 per cent less than a gas boiler, and 72 per cent less than an all-electric system, taking into account the inefficiency of power stations and losses in the delivery of electricity.
Installation of the unit is relatively simple and requires suitable siting, 2 water pipe connections, a power supply and a control signal.
