Why insure?

It is an interesting fact that most car owners insure their car on a 'fully comprehensive' basis, which includes loss and damage to their car, and not just 'third party only', which is the legal minimum. Yet statistics show that when it comes to their home and its contents, or even their business premises, a significant proportion are either uninsured or underinsured. Why should this be?
