Denbighshire
Best Practice Recognised
from "UK Landlord" magazine, March 2007
The NLA's new member, Denbighshire County Council , has been commended for its affordable housing policy by Housemark , a national housing body working to promote best practice across the housing sector.
The Council's policy requires working with developers to ensure 30 per cent of dwellings on all new housing developments are affordable to local people. Since introducing the policy in July 2004, planning permission has been given for 247 new affordable homes, most of which will be available to first-time buyers. The County's first affordable housing property was completed in Ruthin in 2006 and further schemes are currently being built in Llangollen, Bryn Eglwys and Rhyl.
Denbighshire County Council's policy has also attracted praise from the Welsh Assembly Government in their "Affordable Housing Toolkit" report , and Housemark is calling on other local authorities to follow the best practice example set by Denbighshire.
Housemark also highlighted the rural housing enabler project and the county-wide affordable housing register that are managed by Cymdeithas Tai Clwyd, as excellent
examples of partner working.
