Farewell to Rigsby
from "UK Landlord" magazine, May 2007
The image of the money-hungry, Rigsby-esque landlord is beginning to fade, according to a Bradford and Bingley survey, which re-assesses the picture of the typical British landlord.
Only 8 per cent of the landlords surveyed said it was their full-time occupation. The rest are either employed by somebody else (49 per cent), self-employed (31 per cent) or retired (7 per cent). Of these just over a quarter (26 per cent) describe themselves as working in higher managerial or professional jobs and 11 per cent work in the service industries as plumbers, electricians, carpenters, hairdressers and cleaners.
People of all ages are benefiting from buy-to-let with an almost equal number of people stating that they are over 45 yrs (48 per cent) as under (50 per cent). 83 per cent of landlords plan to increase or maintain their portfolios in the next six months, while only 3 per cent are hoping to reduce the number of properties they
own.
