NLA and Greater Tyne Merge
from "UK Landlord" magazine, July 2007
The NLA and the Greater Tyne Landlords Association have formally merged. This follows Greater Tyne's affiliation with the NLA one year ago.
"Having worked closely together for a year, we are very pleased that Greater Tyne felt able to merge with the NLA," said Simon Gordon, NLA Head of Public Affairs. "The private-rented sector in the North East is under particular pressure.
Newcastle City Council is charging one of the highest HMO licence fees in the country and some of its planning proposals have caused great concern amongst the landlord community.
Landlords play a vital role in the housing market in the Tyneside area and that needs to be recognised. Their contribution needs to cherished, not over-burdened with heavy regulation at local level." Bruce Haagensen, Chairman of the Greater Tyne Landlords Association (GTLA), underlined the benefits of joining the NLA to landlords in the region: "We have given much thought to this move. GTLA has always been a strongly-based local association and we wish to preserve that local role. However, we recognise that it is only by landlords banding together that a coherent voice will emerge that all levels of government will listen to. We believe it is time for us to move forward in conjunction with the NLA, especially as they are sponsoring a tenancy deposit protection scheme which, in our opinion, is good for the whole
private-rented sector."
