NLA Landlord Development programme

from "UK Landlord" magazine, Sep 2007

Do you know what the rules are on unlawful discrimination or what is best practice when a tenant dies? Look out for the NLA's Landlord Library website, available to all NLA landlord members.

The unique tool has been developed with 2 specific objectives in mind. It will provide landlords 24/7 access to up-to-date information and advice that will guide them on all aspects of letting residential property.

And, it also allows users to follow a structured programme so as to continuously build on their professional development in the privaterented sector.

The website have been specifically devised for busy landlords and others working in the private-rented sector, who can follow modules at their own pace, to perfect their understanding and knowledge of key legislation and best practice ranging from anything from licensing to rules on gas and electrical safety.

Successful completion of certain modules can be used to evidence landlords' competence and gain recognition and accreditation from various local authorities which run landlord accreditation schemes.

Devised and written by NLA staff and other experts, the comprehensive website guides users on important matters affecting landlords including the regulatory regime in which they operate, tenancy issues, as well as safety, property and financial information.

The site is written in clear and simple language and uses graphics and visual images, for example, photographs of what common asbestos containing products actually look like, to make the resource user-friendly.

"The whole beauty of the site is that it is a development tool and a resource library for keeping members up-to-date and for problem-solving, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week," NLA Director, Richard Price told UK Landlord.

The site also provides a useful glossary of over 100 acronyms, and provides up-to-date information about legislation in force, including direct links to statutory instruments and Acts of Parliament relevant to a landlord's letting operations. The launch of this online personal property assistant completes the NLA's landlord development package which also includes the NLA Landlord Development Manual available to all NLA members as well as regular landlord seminars for both new and experienced landlords.

If you would like to take a look around the site, go to www.nlalandlordlibrary.org.uk. Members of the NLA will be able to take full advantage of the site as part of their package of benefits once they have followed a very simple registration process. The site is sponsored by HFIS, the NLA's preferred insurance supplier.
