Student tenants clean up Cardiff
from "UK Landlord" magazine, Sep 2007
An operation aimed at reducing rubbish left by students in rental properties at the end of term has met with success for the third year running.
'Get it out for Cardiff' is part of the South Wales Echo-backed 'Keep Cardiff Tidy' campaign which aims to keep Cardiff a clean and healthy city for all its residents, visitors and tourists. Get It Out For Cardiff particularly targets the areas of Cathays, Plasnewydd and parts of Gabalfa and Adamsdown, where there is a large population of students living in private-rented accommodation.
Together, local landlords, students, local councillors and student representatives collected 350 tonnes of waste and recycling: more than three times the original target of 100 tonnes, and over four times last year's figure of 80 tonnes.
NLA Welsh Regional Representative Lee Cecil attributed the success of this year's campaign to the high profile awarenessraising campaign done throughout the year towards students and landlords alike. Through his various roles as a local landlord, NLA Regional Representative for Wales and Chair of the Cardiff Landlords' Forum, Lee convinced private sector landlords in Cardiff to participate in the scheme. "We advised landlords on things like how to organise the rubbish, and where to position it in relation to the property, and what to tell their students." Lee also worked on building good relations with the local waste disposal collectors who are now supportive of the scheme.
Next year Lee plans to bring on board some of the 90 non-accredited letting agents in the city, and he has been working with Cardiff City Council to raise awareness about waste management and why it is important for their clients, many of
whom are absentee landlords.
