Energy Savings to be spurred by HIPS
from "UK Landlord" magazine, November 2007
Owners of properties with four or more bedrooms could save hundreds of pounds on energy bills, according to a snapshot survey of energy assessors carried out by the Department of Communities and Local Government since the introduction of the Home Information Packs for four-bedroom homes in August 2007.
The survey reported that on a scale of A to G, the average property with four or more bedrooms only got an 'E' rating, mainly due to inefficient heating and lighting. Energy assessors have pointed out, however, that this rating could be raised to a 'C' rating by putting in cavity wall and loft insulation, double glazing on windows, low-energy lighting, and thermostatic valves on radiators. While there is no mention of the costs involved in doing this work, the DCLG refers to energy saving grants of up to £300, and that the average four-bedroom house could also save approximately £180 per year on heating, £60 per year on lighting and £30 per year on hot water bills.
