£1bn Facelift for Swansea
from "UK Landlord" magazine, March 2008
In a move described by Council Leader Chris Holley, as "probably the most significant announcement during the past 50 years for Swansea" developers Urban Splash and Hammerson have been commissioned to spearhead regeneration at four sites within the Welsh city.
The two companies will work with the Council and the Welsh Assembly over the next 18 months to try and secure the required planning consents. The Quadrant, St David's shopping centre, and the car parks at Paxton Street and County Hall are included in the scheme, which calls for the creation of 600,000 sq ft of new retail space and 1,000 homes, alongside new leisure, office, hotel, and conference facilities. Other objectives include the transformation of Oystermouth Road into a "European Boulevard", connecting the city to the waterfront, and integrating the new area with the neighbouring Maritime Quarter.
The Swansea Housing Association is also looking to contribute to the city's renewal, and is behind proposals for a £22 m revamp of Swansea High Street that intends to breathe new life into the area by creating a "village" of high quality retail space and affordable homes in between Castle Square and the Railway station.
The Council has declared its support for the project and has sold the King's Lane
Warehouse to the Association.
