NLA presents Landlords’ Professional Standards
from "UK Landlord" magazine, March 2008
The NLA has welcomed the government's review of the private-rented sector as an opportunity to showcase the commitment to standards that characterises the professional landlord.
The Department of Communities and Local Government published the terms of reference for the review at the beginning of this year.
NLA Chairman, David Salusbury, commented: "The vast majority of landlords are professional business people who take their responsibilities to tenants very seriously.
This review will consider the impact of the growth of the buy-to-let sector as well as explore how the regulatory changes have sought to raise standards in the sector." By contrast, others such as the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) have said the review is unnecessary and will cause confusion with possible further inconsistent legislation on the sector. At the same time, the British Property Federation, which represents large property developers and investors, is lobbying for the review to pave the way for greater investment from institutions to fund large-scale, 'build-to-let' developments to provide affordable rental accommodation as a solution to the current housing crisis.
The NLA will take an active role in the review. "We look forward to the opportunity of providing crucial evidence of the importance of the sector to the overall housing mix and the health of the property market." The review will consider the composition of the sector, the priorities for landlords and tenants, and will explore what possible actions are necessary to ensure that the sector delivers the right type of good quality homes that meet demand both now
and into the future.
