Local Housing Allowance in Northern Ireland
from "UK Landlord" magazine, May 2008
Local Housing Allowance, the new way of working out Housing Benefit for private tenants, was introduced nationally in April.
The NLA's Regional Representative in Northern Ireland, Connor McCann advises landlords in Northern Ireland to be aware of the main difference in the system. In Northern Ireland, rather than housing benefit being paid to the claimant, the claimant has the right to choose whether LHA is paid to them or directly to the landlord. If the claimant is six weeks or more in arrears, the Housing Executive will pay LHA directly to the landlord.
