London Councils consider charging for agency fees
from "UK Landlord" magazine, May 2008
Two London Councils (Westminster and Southwark) are considering launching into business as private letting and management agents, following the announcement of the OFT's High Court proceedings against Foxtons estate agents for charging landlords tenancy renewal fees.
Southwark Council's home ownership unit has sent letters to landlords suggesting that fees would start at 6 per cent, meaning the not-forprofit agencies would undercut many established agencies on the market.
The services, which are still under consideration by the councils, would hope to raise standards in
the management of rental properties.
