Planning process under review
from "UK Landlord" magazine, May 2008
The Government launched a review of the planning application regime in March in the hope of creating a more efficient planning system. The review also aims to cut the amount of jargon used by planners, and bring about more regional involvement in development plans.
Communities secretary Hazel Blears has stressed that the review will not weaken important safeguards or reduce public consultation: "We need to make sure that making the system more efficient doesn't mean squeezing the ability of people to have a say."
The review will consider various aspects of the planning process, including unnecessary duplication of paperwork, faster resolution of pre-build conditions and agreement on construction schedules, greater use of technology to notify people about planning applications, and early involvement of statutory consultees such as the Highways Agency and
the Environment Agency.
