Save Housing in Newcastle
Do you let any of your properties to 3 or more unrelated tenants? If the answer is yes then you let a shared house - a House in Multiple Occupation (HMO).
Newcastle City Council is limiting groups of people living together in ‘family homes’ by restricting planning permission for new shared houses in several parts of the city through what is known as Article 4 Directions.
In November 2010, Newcastle City Council made its first Article 4 Direction across 12 streets in Jesmond Ward. This Direction came into force in November 2011. Before evaluating the effectiveness of the first scheme, the Council launched a consultation on a second scheme in December 2011 covering the area of High West Jesmond. This consultation closed on 17 February 2012 and on the same day, the Council launched a third consultation on the possibility of a third Article 4 Direction in St Gabriel’s.
Beyond the obvious problems this will cause for reputable landlords who wish to increase their portfolio’s, the National Landlords Association believes this is going to have a massive impact on the supply of good quality, affordable private rented accommodation in Newcastle.
