Save Housing in Northampton

Do you let properties to 3 or more unrelated tenants in Northampton? If the answer is yes then you let a shred house - A House in Multiple Occupation (HMO).

Northampton Borough Council are limiting groups of people living together in ‘family homes’ by restricting planning permission for new shared houses through Article 4 Directions.

The Article 4 Direction was made on 28 February 2011 and despite an active local campaign, it was confirmed by the Council on 8 August. It came into force on 14 March 2012 and covers the wards of Castle, Abington, Trinity, Phippsville, Semilong, Kingsley, Kingsthorpe, St David's, Sunnyside, Spring Park, Obelisk and Delapre and Briar Hill.

Beyond the obvious problems this will cause for reputable landlords who wish to increase their portfolio’s, the National Landlords Association believes this is going to have a massive impact on the supply of good quality, affordable private rented accommodation in Northampton. It will also affect tenants, homeowners and the local authority.
